Trout Spey Float Trip on The Yellowstone

Spey casting = single or double-hand = is becoming quite accessible and doable thanks to the gear development and the good educational sources during the recent few years. As many of you know, Spey casting has been a synonym to Atlantic salmon and steelhead fishing. However, nowadays, the moniker and genre "Trout Spey" has been publicly and solidly established with the army of enthusiastic followers.

Trout Spey has become an essential method to target large trout and water types where we don't pry with a regular single-hand rod system. And it has been proven to be effective on the big Western rivers such as the Yellowstone River.

Spey fishing is the main focus during this trip. But also we do fish with our single-hand rods as we float down the river. So, catching trout is our main objective, just like with any other guide trips. Also, we will discuss water reading and Spey gear that are different from while fishing with the single-hand rods. That may even change your point of view. So my sincere wish is what clients learn about Spey casting can be applied to when fishing for any other species.

My Spey Journey

I'm not a certified casting instructor, per se, and I've been Spey casting only for the past several years, however, my Spey casting is more than adequate to get the jobs done. I can coach the physical matters and explain the concepts and theories = why and how. Then I am a certified "Spey gear junkie", period. I can go on and on from the handle to the fly.

Reasons I started Spey casting and I keep performing are: trout Spey here on the Yellowstone River and steelhead fishing in Pacific Northwest. Now I have several trout Spey calibers to choose from but every now and then I blast bigger and longer sticks to practice and feel the gear for the upcoming steelhead expeditions. I'm becoming a self proclaimed and publicly certified "steelheader".

Below is my Spey documentary (or resume, so to speak)!

One Angler

Because of the amount of attention and the nature of Spey casting and fishing (we cast longer than with the single-handers and we cover some distance), one angler per boat is preferred for this specific trip.

Spey Gear Rental

All the necessary Spey gear for the day is available for rent to one angler. That is, either for a totally new aspiring Spey fisher or a client with some experiences and his/her gear. Of course, flies are included.

Single-hand rods are also available.

et cetera

The rest of trip details are the same as the regular trips (lunch, shuttle, so forth).

I may consider to accept two Spey anglers only when both of them are fully equipped with both single- and double-handers and accept the limited guide attention and fishing time/space. Please inquire.
